The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Friday welcomed President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order to subject all government officials to lifestyle checks as a measure to deter possible corruption.

The move followed as Marcos ordered the implementation of the measure within the executive department amid an ongoing probe into alleged irregularities in the government’s flood control projects.

In an ambush interview, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. expressed full support for the initiative, saying it would help uncover possible misconduct among public officials.

“In my previous occupation as a businessman, ginagawa ko na talaga sa sarili kong kompanya iyon (I already did that in my own company). So, I totally welcome it,” he said.

“That is one good way to catch kung sino man iyong may kalokohan (whoever is involved in misconduct).”

Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque likewise affirmed her compliance with the President’s directive.

Roque further noted that the DTI has already begun addressing the alleged “accreditation for sale” scheme involving contractors of the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB).

“There are certain requirements needed to secure a license, whether ‘yung mas mababa (the lower ones), all the way to Quadruple A. We have a hearing now; we are already starting the process,” she said.

She, however, refused to give details, citing the ongoing hearings. (PNA)
