Sarangani province’s recovery rate for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) increased to 94 percent as of Wednesday, giving residents and front-line workers some relief as they head into the Christmas holidays.

Based on data released by the Department of Health (DOH)-Region 12, the province’s active cases have dropped to eight, the lowest in the region, after posting zero new infections and 16 recoveries in the last three days.

The confirmed cases in the area since March have so far reached a total of 398, with 14 deaths and 376 recoveries.

Dr. Arvin Alejandro, head of the Provincial Health Office, attributed the development to the unified efforts of local government leaders, concerned stakeholders, and their partners in containing the disease.

“It led us into less than 400 cases, our positivity rate is just about 8.5 percent and our mortality (rate) is not that much likewise,” he said in a virtual Christmas program hosted by the Provincial Information Office.

He said they are continually working with the province’s seven municipal governments, through the health offices, and the DOH to prevent another surge of Covid-19 cases in the area.

Despite the improved situation, Sarangani Gov. Steve Chiongbian Solon advised residents to remain vigilant and “not let our guards down” during the holidays.

He cited the sustained compliance to minimum health standards like the wearing of face shields and face masks, and observance of safe physical distancing when going to public places.

The simple wearing of a face mask, he said, will not only protect people from getting Covid-19 but other diseases as well like influenza.

The governor said they should also continue to avoid joining mass gatherings, especially those with people that they don’t know.

“I know that this will be difficult because it’s Christmas but this is for the health and safety of everyone,” he said.

Solon assured that the provincial government has been preparing for the coming of the Covid-19 vaccines and will push for its immediate rollout in the area when available. (PNA)
