Tennielle Bedua Madis captured two titles in the 37th RGB Penang Open Age Group Tennis Championships in Malaysia on Sunday.

Unseeded in the girls’ 16-under singles category, Madis stunned No. 1 seed Chanya Kai Ning Ng of Singapore, 6-2, 6-1, to claim victory in their title showdown at the Penang Sports Club.

On her way to the finals, Madis eliminated No. 2 seed Alyssa Wong of Penang, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round; Eliora Hii of Sabah, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinal; and compatriot Eidlemar Dane Basijan, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinal.

Madis, a native of M’lang town in Cotabato province, teamed up with Basijan to secure the doubles title over Chanya Ng and Sena Sakai of Japan, 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Filipinos Aaron Kevin Tabura and Josh Benedict Lim reached the boys’ 14-under doubles semifinal round but lost to No. 1 seeds Adeeb Azhari (Penang) and Devesh Sarawanan (Selangor), 7-6 (5, 2-6), 6-10.

Ashari and Sarawanan eventually took the crown after prevailing over No. 2 seeds Louis Tan (Kedah) and Aqil Adibi (Kuala Lumpur), 6-1, 7-6 (6).

In the boys’ 16-under category, No. 2 seed Timothy Yi Thim Foo (Penang) ousted No. 1 seed Gautam Balakrishan (Penang), 7-6 (7), 6-4, to pocket the singles title.

The No. 2 pair of Balakrishan and Haziq Roslani (Kedah) bagged the doubles title over No. 1 seeds Sachin Bala (Selangor) and Timothy Foo (Penang), 6-4, 6-1.

In the 18-under category, No. 1 seed Ryan Kye Em Khoo (Penang) won the boys’ singles title over No. 2 seed Roger Tan (Penang), 6-4, 6-4, while the girls’ title went to Chan Li Ying (Penang), who defeated Chan Yu Chi (Penang), 6-2, 6-1.

Also winning their respective singles final matches were Devesh Sarawanan (boys’ 14-under) and Zooey Mak (girls’ 14-under) of Selangor, and Koreans Min Sik Seo (boys’ 12-under), Sia Yeom (girls’ 12-under), Choi Min Geon (boys’ 10-under) and Kim Ayul (girls’ 10-under).

Other doubles champions were Choi Min Geon and Kim Hyun Hak (boys’ 10-under), Kim Ayul and Jan Hyoin (girls’ 10-under), Seo Min Sok and Kim Ji Han (boys’ 12-under), Sia Yeom and Joo Ire (girls’ 12-under), and Catherine Le Liew of Perak and Lynn Lim of Kuala Lumpur (girls’ 14-under).

The Filipino athletes were accompanied by coaches Jovy Mamawal and Merlo Pornobi. (PNA)
