This city will recognize individuals who contributed to its growth to highlight its 86th Charter Day celebration with the theme “Trailblazing Ilonggos leading the way to sustainable progress” on Aug. 25.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Jerry Treñas said Iloilo City had gone a long way because of its outstanding individuals.

“We are looking forward to more because we have seen that our city has already a direction,” he said.

Dr. Alfonso Uy, Dr. Henry Chusuey, architect Sergio Peñasales, Dr. Engracio Cortez, and Grand Master Eugene Torre will be bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award as they not only contributed to city’s growth and prosperity but have also left a lasting legacy for the future generation.

A Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award will be conferred to former Senator Franklin Drilon for his exemplary contribution to Public Service, singer-composer Jose Mari Chan for Arts and Music, and radio founder Dr. Rogelio Florete for the Mass Media.

The Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award is bestowed upon individuals who made lasting and significant contributions to their field of expertise, demonstrated exemplary dedication, passion and commitment, and whose achievements served as inspiration for others to follow.

Manuel Librodo Jr., Carmela Española, Ruth Jarantilla, Edwin Bautista, Mary Ann Gumban, Cezar Consing, Jessica Dator-Bercilla, Edwin Valencia, Leila Valencia and Jhett Tolentino composed the Ten Outstanding Ilonggos of the city.

“We are very proud of what Iloilo City has achieved. Going back several years, we are only a small city, but we are moving forward very fast,” Treñas said.

The awarding ceremony will be held during the Mayor’s Dinner on Aug. 25.

Meanwhile, on Aug. 19, Ballet Philippines will have a free performance at the Iloilo Convention Center courtesy of Chan.

Treñas said it will be one of their first shows outside of Metro Manila.

“It only shows that Iloilo is the center of culture. I am inviting every one, tickets will be free. It’s a treat,” he said.

Aug. 25 has been declared as a special non-working day in Iloilo City as per Proclamation Number 306 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin by the authority of President Ferdinand R. Marcos on July 31, 2023. (PNA)
