Public school teachers will start using radio broadcasting as a tool to relay the lessons to schoolchildren and supplement the self-learning modules amid the community quarantine, Mayor Edgardo Labella said on Tuesday.

The Local School Board (LSB) coordinated with the regional Department of Education’s (DepEd) Curriculum Implementation Division in training the city’s public school teachers for radio broadcast, guidelines and ethics starting on Monday.

The teachers were also brought to the local radio station to expose them to the best practices when teaching various school subjects on air.

Labella said that teaching through radio broadcast will have its pilot testing within this week, in preparation for the official start of second quarter classes in January 2021.

“We are currently preparing a radio booth for this in the DepEd Cebu City building,” he said.

The mayor noted that the public education system has been significantly disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, citing that not all students have access to gadgets and stable internet connection.

Labella said the “Local School Board has seen that my suggestion to have an educational radio is practical, sustainable, and effective”.

“I am very grateful for the collective effort to push for this city-wide educational approach so that our students can be supported in their modular learning. I am hopeful that this can ease some of the difficulties they experience,” he said. (PNA)
