The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the local government units of Ilocos Norte are collaborating to further boost the cattle industry in the province and increase the income of farmers by 34 percent after two years.

Under the DA’s Organic Agriculture Livelihood Program (OALP), breeder cattle are distributed to small farmers. The offspring produced by these cattle will then be turned over to other farmer-recipients, creating a sustainable cycle.

Aside from increasing the income of farmers, the initiative also teaches them to convert animal waste into organic fertilizers and enhance food security.

As part of the program, 22 cattle valued at approximately PHP1.4 million were turned over to the Siwawer Organic Practitioners Association, Inc. in Vintar, Ilocos Norte on Thursday.

According to the local government unit of Vintar, it was the second batch of cattle distributed to beneficiaries under the DA program, which is being implemented with the help of partner agencies.

“The livestock dispersal program aims to provide an alternative income to farmers and at the same time, promote food sufficiency in every Ilocano table,” Dr. Loida Valenzuela, provincial veterinarian of Ilocos Norte, said in an interview.

Before the turnover of the cattle, the beneficiaries were trained in livestock raising to ensure that they are capable of raising the animals. They were also taught how to use animal manure as substrates for vermicomposting.

The provincial government of Ilocos Norte has been advocating for soil health as soil conditions in the province have deteriorated over the years due to the excessive use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides.

“We are glad and thankful for this program. It is a big help to us farmers,” said Judy Poleracio, one of the cattle beneficiaries from Vintar town.

The Philippine Statistics Authority has reported a positive growth in cattle raising in Ilocos Norte in the first few months of the year, with 76,241 heads as of April. (PNA)
