The city government is considering establishing a separate department dedicated solely to managing the city’s solid waste.

In an interview on Monday, 1st District Councilor Eric Salcedo proposed an ordinance to create a distinct solid waste management department, separating it from the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO). The new department will primarily focus on garbage disposal and segregation.

“The city generates about 600 tons of garbage daily, and this volume requires a focused, specialized agency to handle waste management effectively,” Salcedo said.

Councilor of the 1st District Desiree Ann Dahino backed the move, calling it a “promising step toward more efficient waste solutions.”

However, Elmer Villamor, former Bonbon barangay secretary and an active social media watchdog, cautioned that the plan would only work “if backed by true political will.”

Patag Barangay Chairman Eric Abaday, meanwhile, stressed that real change requires collaboration between citizens and city leaders. “We must go beyond complaining. Cleanliness requires personal discipline and leadership that’s bold, decisive, and consistent,” he said.

The city has allocated a PHP20 million monthly budget for garbage management. (PNA)
