BTS, the Korean boy band sensation, has topped the chart of the World’s Top Artists for two years in a row, with global recorded-music revenues reaching $25.9 billion, following Taylor Swift, who finished second last year.

Swift was the highest charting solo artist, with Adele coming in third after re-entering the chart for the first time since winning it in 2015. Former male Global Artist Chart winners Drake and Ed Sheeran came in at #4 and #5, respectively.

Olivia Rodrigo, the 2022 Billboard Woman of the Year, made her first appearance on the chart in 2021 at #10, following the global success of her debut album SOUR.

List of previous winners:
2020 – BTS
2019 – Taylor Swift
2018 – Drake
2017 – Ed Sheeran
2016 – Drake
2015 – Adele
2014 – Taylor Swift
2013 – One Direction

According to the IFPI Global Music Report, the global recorded music market grew by 18.5% in 2021. IFPI’s Global Music Report shows total revenues for 2021 were USD 25.9 billion. Paid subscription streaming revenues increased by 21.9% USD 12.3 billion. There were 523 million users of paid subscription accounts at the end of 2021.

“BTS’ phenomenal success over the last year is a testament to their creativity, hard work and ongoing commitment to continuing to find ways to bring their music to the world. By performing in three different languages, they demonstrate their extraordinarily unique global appeal and their dynamic and passionate fanbase has helped to make them the first artists in history to top the Global Artist Chart in two consecutive years,” said Frances Moore, Chief Executive of IFPI.

The IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award and top ten chart are the only rankings that accurately measure consumption across all formats (including streaming formats, digital and physical album, and singles sales) and countries. It is weighted according to the relative worth of each mode of consumption.
