A Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) legislator filed a measure that would reduce the cost of energy use for government offices and buildings through solar energy.

Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Parliament Member Amilbahar Mawallil said BTA Bill No. 187, or the Solar Energy in Bangsamoro Government Offices Act of 2022, seeks to promote investments in the energy and power generation sector.

The bill also aims to pursue the development of low-carbon, sustainable power generation policies.

“This will reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-based energy and lessen carbon emissions and pollution in the environment,” Mawallil, a former journalist, told reporters Thursday.

Mawallil’s proposal specifically aims to reduce the regional government’s electricity coasts, while easing the demands of the region’s scarce power supply.

The bill also seeks to mandate all BARMM government agencies to install solar energy systems in their respective offices and buildings.

If passed into law, all regional government agencies would be mandated to start installing solar energy systems and retrofitting their respective buildings and offices within one year after the effectivity of the proposed bill. (PNA)
