The city is eyeing the allocation of funds for the mandatory deworming among learners in the city, coupled with mandatory lessons on proper handwashing.

“Deworming should be mandatory for all public kindergarten, elementary, and secondary students, including children in public daycare centers,” Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. said in a statement Tuesday.

He said this program must be institutionalized as an annual program of the city health services office (CHSO) to protect the health, improve nutrition, and support cognitive and physical development among children.

The Department of Health (DOH)-Cordillera said deworming is crucial to eliminate soil-transmitted intestinal worms in children and to prevent malnutrition and stunting. It is a safe and cost-effective initiative that ensures healthy growth and boosts the long-term well-being of children.

The councilor said they are targeting children from one to 19 years old with deworming medicines given at least twice a year.

He also emphasized the importance of hygiene and sanitation measures.

“Activities will emphasize the proper handwashing before and after meals and after using the toilet, maintaining clipped fingernails and wearing footwear, access to and proper use of sanitary toilet facilities as mandated by the Baguio Sanitation Code, and safe food handling along with drinking potable water,” he said.

He said these activities must be included as a regular program of the CHSO and the DepEd-Baguio, with the funds being incorporated in their annual budget. (PNA)
