The national tourism organizations (NTOs) of the 11 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states gathered here on Monday to align efforts and further develop Southeast Asia as an attractive single destination.
The 63rd ASEAN National Tourism Organizations Meeting, chaired by the Philippines, marks the official start of the week-long ASEAN-related meetings being convened on Cebu island from Jan. 26 to 27.
“Guided by the Philippines ASEAN chairship theme, Navigating Our Future Together, and echoed by the ASEAN tourism forum theme, Navigating Our Tourism Future Together, we are reminded that the future of tourism in our region will not be shaped by any one country alone,” Tourism Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso said in her opening statement.
“It will be shaped by how well we align our strategies, our standards, our innovations, and, most importantly, our resolve to ensure that tourism remains a force for good.”
The gathering brings together senior tourism officials from ASEAN member states, dialogue partners, and international organizations, with an aim to review ongoing initiatives on the region’s tourism sector.
The meeting’s vice chair and assistant chief executive of the International Group HQ and Oceania at Singapore Tourism Board, Oliver Chong, said Singapore is committed to advance a resilient and “future-ready” tourism in Southeast Asia.
“Our collective strength lies in our diversity —11 unique destinations, each offering distinct experiences and rich cultural heritage, yet united by shared values and common aspirations,” he said.
“We have a valuable opportunity to build upon our past successes while charting innovative pathways for sustainable tourism development.”
Part of the meeting’s agenda is to enhance seamless travel facilitation among the 11 member states and promoting responsible tourism practices.
The bloc will open this week the 2026 ASEAN Tourism Forum, 29th Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers; and the ASEAN Travel Exchange (TRAVEX), one of the region’s largest business-to-business tourism trade show. (PNA)
