The Department of Agriculture (DA) 13 (Caraga), through the Bureau of Animal Industry, distributed 50 heads of cattle to the same number of farmers in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur on Wednesday as part of a regional initiative to promote organic livestock farming.
The beneficiaries, residents of six barangays including Culambugan, New Tubigon, Anahawan, Afga, Poblacion, and Ilihan, were chosen based on their ability to raise cattle in pasture areas that are free from chemical contamination.
“This dispersal aims to strengthen organic agriculture and livestock practices in Sibagat, which is identified as an organic municipality in the country,” said Rodolfo Domingo, Agriculturist II of DA-13’s Organic Agriculture Program, in an interview on Thursday.
The PHP2.5 million worth of cattle were released under a dispersal scheme where the local government unit (LGU) identifies qualified farmers with sufficient pasture land.
Domingo emphasized that the cattle must graze on chemical-free grasses to maintain organic standards.
He noted that another group of farmers in Sibagat is awaiting accreditation under the Bureau of Agricultural and Fisheries Standards’ Participatory Guarantee System, which certifies organic farming practices and products for market distribution.
The cattle dispersal also promotes sustainability, as calves from the first group will be transferred to the next group of farmer-beneficiaries identified by the LGU, who will also implement organic feeding practices.
Pablo, 35, a recipient from New Tubigon, welcomed the initiative, citing its health and economic benefits.
“In organic farming, we spend less, avoid harmful chemicals, and increase our harvest. It also promotes healthier lifestyles through organic food,” he said in the vernacular.
He also admitted to being new to organic livestock farming, but its positive implications will help him and the other beneficiaries pursue the project.
