As part of strengthened support to public school teachers and administrative staff, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday said it has secured 172,654 Apple MacBook Neo laptops under the DepEd Computerization Program.

This is part of the agency’s move to accelerate efforts for the government’s digital education roadmap.

Under the procurement deal with Mac, the DepEd has secured its first-ever five-year warranty for laptop procurement.

The agency said each unit costs PHP43,000, lower than the suggested retail price of PHP49,900.

Included in the package are built-in productivity tools, delivery and logistics, and professional development for recipients.

In a statement, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the procurement of “high-end and reliable technology” not only honors the dedication of Filipino teachers but also addresses “systemic burdens” within the sector.

“For the longest time, our teachers have carried the heavy personal burden of buying their own laptops or maintaining outdated equipment just to keep up with lesson plans. Under the vision of President Marcos, we are changing the narrative,” he said.

For his part, Apple chief executive officer John Ternus said the deal with the agency was the “biggest education” deal for Mac.

“I’m feeling great about the opportunities ahead for Apple, from our product roadmap and broad range of services to promising areas like health, emerging markets, enterprise, and education,” he said during Apple’s Financial Results Conference Call for 4th Quarter 2026.

“As one example, we recently secured our biggest education deal ever for Mac, with the Department of Education in the Philippines. They’re going to deploy 170,000 MacBook Neos to teachers and staff.”

Overall, the DepEd has awarded contracts for 231,725 laptops for teachers nationwide.

These consist of 169,008 MacBook Neo units and 62,717 Windows-based units, alongside 3,646 MacBook Neo laptops for administrative officers.

The deployment of all 172,654 MacBook Neo units is scheduled from November 2026 through March 2027. (PNA)
