Cornick production continues to provide livelihood opportunities for local entrepreneurs in Ilocos, where the crunchy corn nut Filipino snack supports small businesses and showcases local food craftsmanship.

Made from corn kernels that are processed and fried until crispy, cornick comes in various flavors and provides small-scale food processors an opportunity to turn agricultural products into marketable goods.

In Cabugao, Susan Sabio, owner of Kay Susan Tayo Food Products, said cornick production provides income through food processing and entrepreneurship.

The process involves preparing corn kernels, cooking or soaking them as needed, drying and frying them until crispy, then adding seasonings to create different flavors. Native garlic is particularly popular for its distinct aroma and flavor.

Cornick production requires time, proper equipment and careful handling, but it also supports other workers and businesses, including raw material suppliers, packaging providers and retailers.

“We process around 100 kilos of corn per day on average,” Sabio told the Philippine News Agency on Monday during a creative tour organized by the Department of Tourism and Department of Trade and Industry in Region 1 at her production facility in Barangay Margaay.

Known for its flavorful, crunchy chichacorn, Kay Susan Tayo Food Products has provided livelihoods to about 40 workers at its farm and processing facility for more than a decade.

“I give corn seeds to farmers so they could plant to supply our needs,” Sabio added.

With access to business development assistance, appropriate processing technology and reliable markets, local chichacorn producers like Sabio can strengthen their operations and pursue growth opportunities.

Improved packaging, consistent product quality and new flavors can also help local producers attract customers and expand their markets.

Sabio said she was grateful that her business had been included in the creative tour and in government-organized trade fairs, community markets and other promotional activities that help introduce locally produced cornick to more consumers.
