The rehabilitation and social services in Marawi, Lanao del Sur remain on track nine years after the city’s liberation from a siege by armed militants, officials said Monday.

The Marawi Compensation Board has continues on-site inspections and assessments of claimants whose properties were destroyed. Some were compensated earlier this year.

Army units across the country have been commemorating the ninth year of the city’s liberation since Friday.

The five-month siege staged by Islamic State-affiliated militants, including the Maute group and Abu Sayyaf, was officially declared over on Oct. 23, 2017.

Lt. Col. Antonio Bulao, commander of the Army’s 89th Infantry Battalion based in Davao del Norte, said the liberation of Marawi remains a timeless testament to the unbreakable spirit of the Filipino soldier and the power of a united nation in combating violent extremism.

“As we honor our fallen heroes today, we pledge to carry forward the invaluable lessons of vigilance, unity, and selfless service to preserve the peace they valiantly fought for,” he said during a ceremony Monday.

For Marawi’s Catholic community, losing St. Mary’s Cathedral severed ties to generations of worshippers. Devotees find ways to practice their faith. They gather when priests are available, preserve religious images and serve their communities.

For the predominantly Muslim population, the destruction of homes and neighborhoods likewise meant losing places deeply rooted in family and community life.

Meanwhile, the Marawi City General Hospital in Barangay Tolali is nearing completion and the local government is ready to take over the facility.

Vice Mayor Majul Gandamra said PHP200 million has been allocated for the hospital’s operations in 2027.

The hospital is designed to accommodate up to 100 beds. (PNA)
