What was a simple pick-up at an LRT station became a proud moment for Erica Yu-b when her 18-year-old son, Ayji, showed how natural kindness can be. Right after getting into his mother’s car, Ayji politely asked if he could step back outside for a moment, leaving his mother confused by the sudden request.

Watching from the driver’s seat, Erica saw him walk over to a parked car next to theirs. An elderly woman was struggling alone to load heavy grocery boxes into her vehicle. Without waiting to be asked, Ayji stepped in to load the boxes and lighten her load.

A History Of Quiet Strength

For Erica, her son’s quick response was no surprise. Ayji has been a gentleman since childhood, frequently holding doors for others and helping his teachers at school.

His willingness to help carries an even deeper meaning given his personal history. Back in grade school, Ayji suffered a severe accident that required a steel rod to be placed in his arm. Even after multiple surgeries, his arm never fully straightened. However, after years of recovery, the arm has restored its strength, allowing him to use it without issue. While the condition qualifies him as a person with disability, Ayji prefers not to disclose his PWD status to others.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite his physical hurdles, Ayji never let it hold him back and continued to excel. He stayed a consistent honor student, developed a passion for cooking, and even won a culinary cook-off.

When Ayji returned to the car after helping the elderly woman, Erica turned to him and said, “Anak, thank you for always being a gentleman.”

Ayji stayed silent and did not reply, it was this quiet, and timid nature his mother noticed that became more common after his accident.

For Erica, seeing her son choose to assist a stranger brought immense pride and comfort. Ayji’s simple act serves as a quiet reminder that real strength comes from caring for others, regardless of the personal challenges a person quietly carries.
