The National Privacy Commission (NPC) has signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) with Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC) to strengthen cross-border cooperation on privacy enforcement and personal data protection.

In a statement on Tuesday, NPC Privacy Commissioner Johann Carlos Barcena said the deal involves the collaboration between the two agencies to exchange best practices and experiences on data protection policies and privacy-enhancing technologies.

It also provides opportunities for joint research initiatives, capacity-building activities, training and education programs, and other mutually agreed projects aimed at advancing data protection and privacy.

“This agreement reflects our shared commitment to addressing the evolving challenges of privacy in the borderless digital environment. It likewise creates meaningful opportunities for the Philippines and Japan,” Barcena said.

The MoC was signed during a formal ceremony by Barcena and PPC Chairperson Satoru Tezuka at the PPC Office in Tokyo, Japan on Monday.

“The MoC reaffirms the commitment of the Philippines and Japan to uphold the protection of personal information and deepen regulatory cooperation in support of a trusted and secure digital economy,” he said.

During the event, both agencies highlighted the vital role of international cooperation in addressing privacy risks due to rapid technological developments and expanding global data flows. (PNA)
