The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Tuesday launched a tour that aims to preserve the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) culture by making weaving communities part of tourist itineraries.

“We want the tourists to include in their itinerary the weaving industry, that is why we opted to bring tour organizers and companies to see for themselves the weaving industry,” DOT-CAR Director Jovy Ganongan said.

At least 30 tour operators, media workers and fashion designers from various regions are part of the four-day tour scheduled until Oct. 3.

Organized by DOT-CAR, the tour will cover weaving communities in Ifugao and Kalinga provinces.

The participating tour operators are expected to gain first-hand insights into the potential weaving-based tourism circuits and how they can be integrated into travel packages.

“The weaving tour circuit offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich heritage of indigenous weaving traditions, engage with local artisans and discover the stories behind centuries-old techniques passed down through generations,” Ganongan said.

She said money spent by tourists on products could greatly benefit both the industry and the communities.

In 2023, the Cordillera Regional Development Council added the weaving industry as among its top priority activities, products and economic activities ro help boost the region’s economy. (PNA)
