Local paddlers from this city have shown that they can compete with 18 other elite teams from across the country during the 2025 Iloilo River Dragon Boat Festival.

In an interview on Wednesday, Raphael Dorilag, president of the Iloilo Paddlers Club (IPAD), said they began preparations three months before the Sept. 5-7 competition.

They integrated into their team those who joined the “Bugsay Ta! A Free Dragon Boat Clinic” in May.

“We had rigorous training. Our advantage is that we trained at the Iloilo River, so we are used to the current of the river,” he said.

Dorilag said they had about 70 members joining the various categories of the competition – the Open Standard, Mixed Standard, Women Small Boat, and Senior Mixed Small Boat.

IPAD bagged the championship crown for the Senior Mixed Small Boat, third runner-up for Women Small Boat, and a semifinals berth for the Open Standard.

“We took advantage because it’s here, so we only spent on their registration. They were able to experience the real race with elite teams from all over the country,” he added.

Most of their members were products of their free clinic, in partnership with the Iloilo City Sports Academy, a grassroots program of the city government.

Dorilag said they intend to continue with the clinic to accommodate those interested in joining.

He said more schools and even local government units have signified their willingness to avail themselves of the training.

“Dragon boat will help promote fitness among youth and the community. They learn teamwork and the value of discipline,” he added.

They are also one with the city government in promoting the Iloilo River as a venue for fitness, lifestyle, and tourism, Dorilag said.

In a previous interview, Mayor Raisa Treñas said that last year, the event only gathered 12 teams, but this year, the number increased and includes foreign teams.

“This is good. First, we showcase our Iloilo River, and second, it means that Iloilo City is ready to host international sports events,” she said. (PNA)
