The local government unit (LGU) of Lingig in Surigao del Sur welcomed the full implementation of Republic Act 10787, which mandates the creation of a multi-species marine hatchery in the municipality, calling it a major step forward for the town’s aquaculture sector.

Municipal Agriculture Officer Ricky Tubo said in an interview on Monday that the newly completed PHP40-million hatchery is expected to significantly improve the milkfish industry in Lingig.

The facility is projected to produce up to 25 million milkfish fry annually, providing a vital resource for the town’s more than 2,000 registered fisherfolk.

A PHP12 million solar power system was also installed, which will supply 60 percent of the hatchery’s total electricity needs.

“Among the major impacts of the project is its support for our fisherfolk who are into milkfish production through fishponds and cages,” Tubo said.

He noted that sources of milkfish fry would become easily accessible with the commencement of the hatchery’s operations.

The facility was turned over by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Caraga Region (BFAR-13) on Aug. 28.

“In the next two years, the hatchery will be managed by BFAR-13,” Tubo said, adding that the agency will also provide technical training and additional support to the LGU and other stakeholders before the management is transferred after two years.

“The facility is seen to strengthen local aquaculture production, ensure food security, and provide new livelihood opportunities for coastal communities in Surigao del Sur and across the region,” BFAR-13 Director Omnia Olama said in a statement on Monday. (PNA)
