Marketing assistance from the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) has boosted the community-based tourism association in the Lapus Lapus-Macapagao Local Conservation Area (LCA) of Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

In a statement on Wednesday, city tourism officer Helen Javier Arguelles said the TPB’s Marketing Enhancement Program has helped increase awareness about the destination located within the 364-hectare protected area in Barangay Bulanon.

“With the features and contents shared about the narratives of community-based tourism in Sagay City, there is increased arrivals as we espouse low volume, high-value visitor management strategy,” she said.

With its thriving marine ecosystem and rich wildlife, the Lapus Lapus-Macapagao LCA is promoted by the city government as an emerging ecotourism destination anchored on sustainability.

Besides the marketing assistance, the Lapus Lapus Floating Cottages Association recently received two three-seater kayaks from the TPB.

The TPB also provided kayaks, t-shirt uniforms, catering materials, and communication equipment to the association in 2023.

In July last year, Lapus Lapus Floating Cottage Association leader Joefel Relos and Bulanon village chief Wilfredo Villacastin Jr. signed an agreement with California-based non-profit organization Seacology “to help protect the unique natural beauty, nature, and ecological goods and services of the 364-hectare Lapus Lapus-Macapagao LCA.”

The assistance funded the construction of the watchtower and kayak center as part of the facilities managed by the association, along with the 10 floating cottages.

Arguelles said the northern Negros city’s sustainability efforts within its communities aligns with the seven-point agenda of the Department of Tourism, particularly on strengthening sustainability programs and promoting untapped destinations.

The TPB’s sustainable development goals include promoting community-based tourism to foster more authentic and sustainable tour packages that highlight the nation’s rich natural and cultural heritage, as well as the warm and welcoming hospitality of the Filipino people. (PNA)
