Social media platforms like Facebook, X, and Instagram exist not just to give people a sense of freedom when it comes to expressing themselves. These platforms also serve the purpose of allowing users to be able to connect with each other and build networks. Choosing the right groups, people, and pages to keep in touch with is one way to make one’s social media journey protected and more enjoyable.

1. See If Their Goals Benefit The People and The Community

Some groups and pages intend to serve better purposes than others. While some exist simply to create content that entertains their audiences, some were created for nonprofit causes or to promote awareness concerning certain advocacies. These causes may include combating fake information, promoting better welfare on the internet, and upholding cybersecurity measures.

2. Do Your Research

There are millions of pages, groups, and people registered on Facebook alone. Social media websites often prioritize highlighting recognized public figures such as government organizations, celebrities, and nonprofit groups. You can easily identify which one of them is trusted by researching about them through Google and visiting their profiles.

3. Observe Their Posts

One way to know if you are following the right groups or people is if they are consistently publishing sensible posts that intend to educate, promote, or spread awareness. If these posts are accompanied by positive reactions from other users, then chances are you are following a public figure who upholds ethical values.

4. Look Out For Verified Accounts

In Facebook, X, or Instagram, one of the easiest ways to identify whether a page, group or person is authentic is to check whether their name ends with a white checkmark in a blue circle. This logo means that a public figure is officially recognized by the platform. However, since anyone can request a verified badge nowadays, do maintain your vigilance at all costs by researching about them even if they are verified.

5. Learn When To Unfollow or Unfriend

Pages, groups, and people are the ones who are solely responsible for the different kinds of posts that you see every day in your feed. However, not all of them aspire to share content that is sensible and can benefit other users, including you. If a specific person, group, or page has been continuously promoting false or inappropriate information, it is wise to unfollow or unfriend them to reduce pollution in your timeline.

Following the right groups and individuals is one of the keys to ensuring that you are actively enhancing your social media experience. By engaging with real groups of people, your social media feed is guaranteed to display only information that is shared by trusted individuals and that is sensible and beneficial to your mental health.
