The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) will roll out free “Bagong Pilipinas” digibox units as the country transitions from analog broadcast to digital this year, Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil said on Sunday.

Garafil, in her message during the kick-off rally for the Bagong Pilipinas campaign at the Quirino Grandstand on Sunday, said the free digibox would be given to those who cannot afford to buy new digital TV receivers.

“‘Yun ang pupunan namin sa PCO. So starting this year, magro-rollout kami ng mga libreng Bagong Pilipinas Digibox (That is what we will fill in the PCO. So starting this year, we will roll out free Bagong Pilipinas Digibox),” she said.

As the Philippines switches from analog to digital TV this year, analog TV users in Metro Manila will no longer receive TV signals.

“Kaya nga naisip namin since magta-transition tayo from analog to digital at alam naman natin na hindi naman lahat makakabili ng digital TV. So naisip namin sa PCO — ano ang bago? Maglulunsad kami ng Bagong Pilipinas Digibox (Since we will be transitioning from analog to digital and we know that not everyone can afford a digital TV. So we thought at PCO — what’s new? We will launch Bagong Pilipinas Digibox),” she said.

Garafil said users could enjoy new features, better programming with digital TV, in addition to its emergency and early warning features.

“May early warning channel siya. Para just in case may mga bagyo, may mga kalamidad, at ibang emergency [magkakaroon] ng early warning sa ating mga kababayan para makapaghanda sila (It has an early warning channel. In case there’s typhoon, calamity, and other emergency, [there will be] an early warning to our countrymen so they can prepare),” she said.

During the kick-off rally, the PCO distributed 1,000 Bagong Pilipinas digibox units.

The Bagong Pilipinas campaign is the overarching theme of the Marcos administration’s brand of governance and leadership, characterized by a principled, accountable, and dependable government reinforced by unified institutions of society. (PNA)
