Hundreds of farmers in Ligao City are looking forward to an increase in their harvest in the next cropping season after a PHP30-million dam project was completed in their area early this month.

In a phone interview on Thursday, Albay 3rd District Rep. Fernando Cabredo said the dam project would provide sufficient water to irrigate rice lands dependent on rain for a long time.

“This is indeed proof that if there’s a will, there is a way to help our farmers who clamor for a supply of water and allow them to plant rice for two planting seasons,” Cabredo said.

He said the dam project, also known as the “Libtong Reservoir”, is located in Sitio Libtong, Barangay Cabarian.

It can impound rainwater and supply abundant irrigation to approximately 60 hectares of rice lands not only in Cabarian but also in the nearby villages of Maonon, Cabarian, and Catburawan.

“Now that the project has been completed and waters are expected to be distributed to rice lands, farmers can have an abundant harvest,” Cabredo added.

The lawmaker proposed the appropriation of PHP30 million from the national coffers to fund the construction of Libtong Reservoir. (PNA)
