Quezon City wants to lay claim to the title “Sports Capital of the Philippines” with the renovated Amoranto Sports Complex in Barangay Paligsahan.

The complex boasts a 3,500-seating capacity arena, Olympic-size swimming pool with 10 lanes, open tennis court and the indoor sports facility that houses venues for basketball, volleyball, badminton, billiards, table tennis and darts.

Mayor Joy Belmonte declared they are ready to host even international competitions.

“Quezon City will not only be known for being the City of Stars but also as the sports capital of our country. Iyan ang aking (That is my) goal, to promote, provide and create outstanding athletes here in the city, but we cannot create champions without first-class facilities,” Belmonte said in a statement on Friday.

A multilevel parking building was also built to accommodate even big vehicles, including buses.

The city government began the renovation in April last year to revitalize sports and harness the potential of the city’s athletes.

“It will be a space where the city’s homegrown athletes can train and improve their skills,” Belmonte said.

The Amoranto Sports Complex was constructed on a 5.8-hectare land in 1960.

The facility first consisted of a grandstand, an eight-lane track and field oval, bleachers and a gymnasium.

The complex’s velodrome hosted the cycling events of the 2005 Southeast Asian Games.

QC is known as the “City of Stars” for being the host local government unit of major broadcast networks and the Eastwood City Walk of Fame in Barangay Libis.

Patterned after the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, California, QC’s version features the brass stars of personalities who made significant contributions in the entertainment industry. (PNA)
