Since the beginning of COVID-19, everyone has stayed at home and tried various things to cope with stress and pass the time. Making Dalgona coffee, buying and caring for plants, and finishing a series of good reads for bookworms are all on the agenda.

If there’s one thing that every bookworm out there has been doing during the pandemic, it’s finally befriending the books on their shelves that have been waiting to be read. Thanks to the TikTok app. Not only are bookworms thrilled and addicted to reading their favorite books, but it also influences other people to read, too!

What is BookTok?

BookTok is a community on Tiktok that shares everything about books to read. Tons of booktok videos are to be found on Tiktok, where every user can watch and list down the titles of books that catch their interest. Another advantage of BookTok is that each video clip is classified. One can simply search BookTok and type in the desired book genre they want to read and see all the book recommendations for themselves.

Filipino bookworms now rely on BookTok recommendations because, even in a span of 2-3 minutes per BookTok clip, they can choose from a variety of books to buy online and read in the comfort of their personal spaces in their homes.

Gone are the days when bookworms struggled to decide which books to read next would be added to their to-be-read list. Today, we can easily be introduced to a wide range of books, from best-selling books to underappreciated titles that deserve to be recognized by readers. Also, what better way to read books than to interact with other book lovers online? It’s also happening in the BookTok community, where everyone is leaving comments on BookTok videos to recommend their personal favorites.

It’s like a society of book lovers fostering a positive environment and exchanging ideas about their personal favorite books online.

Now, perhaps you are wondering where BookTok came from and how it suddenly emerged on TikTok. Well, The majority of BookTok’s creators are teenagers and young women. One of them is the TikTok user @caitsbooks, who is now gaining popularity with her thousands of likes on book recommendations on the said app.

Her BookTok videos are categorized so every user can easily find their book of interest. Cool, right?

On January 25, she posted a video clip holding Colleen Hoover’s new book release, titled “Reminders of Him,” where CoHo mentioned the Booktok community in the acknowledgement part of her book. CoHo is tagged as the author of all BookTok’s favorite books with her best-selling novels such as It Ends with Us, Verity, Layla, and Ugly Love, where bookworms go gaga over her plots and writing style in creating such brilliant masterpieces.

Going back three years, there have been so many changes that our reading habits have shifted. Perhaps it simply means that reading can be as adaptable as each book transports us to the imaginary world of reading and the lessons we learn after finishing the last page of a book.
