The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) are set to recognize local government units (LGU) that have made “great strides” in establishing active transport infrastructures such as bike lanes throughout the country.

In a Facebook post, the DOTr said the awards would also take into consideration the LGUs that enacted programs seeking to “encourage” the use of active transportation.

“To qualify for selection, LGUs may submit their entries to the DILG Bureau of Local Government Supervision through the LGU’s respective DILG Regional Offices using this template bit.ly/2021bikelanesaward as reference guide,” the post read.

The awards will be given in three categories — city, 1st to 3rd class municipalities, and 4th to 6th class municipalities. The top three LGUs in each category will receive gold, silver, and bronze awards.

It noted that the top 10 LGUs that meet the selection criteria will also be receiving awards from the DILG.

Final call for the submission of entries will be on Oct. 22, while the awarding ceremony is set to be held on Nov. 28, National Bike Day.

In November 2020, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte approved Proclamation 1052 declaring the “fourth Sunday of November of every year as National Bicycle Day.” (PNA)
