Streaming platform Netflix is releasing a free streaming plan with a limited video selection that will be accessible exclusively on Android phones for the time being, but only in one country, which is Kenya. It’s part of a wider strategy by the streaming giant to entice new African subscribers.

The free plan in Kenya allows individuals to sign up for ad-free Netflix streaming on Android phones, and it will be carried out to more users in the upcoming months. They will be able to log on without providing any billing information and watch a significant number of Netflix content. About a quarter of the TV series and movies presently available on Netflix will be offered completely free.

“If you’ve never watched Netflix before — and many people in Kenya haven’t — this is a great way to experience our service,” Cathy Conk, director of product innovation at Netflix, wrote in the blog post.

“And if you like what you see, it’s easy to upgrade to one of our paid plans so you can enjoy our full catalog on your TV or laptop as well,” the director added.

Given how successful Netflix has become in many territories and other major markets, don’t expect a free Netflix plan anytime soon. Users have already received a free subscription of a 30-day trial during the start of the streaming site’s existence, so if users want to watch that premium content, then they have to pay up.
