The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is eyeing 100,000 registrants daily for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) as the registration process continues to stabilize.

“Registration process is stable. We’re seeing more than 100,000 registrants per day,” PSA quoted chief and National Statistician Undersecretary Claire Dennis Mapa in a recent social media post.

Mapa announced in a recent virtual press conference that more than 12 million Filipinos have already finished Step 2 (biometrics) registration.

He also confirmed that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has printed 500,000 Philippine Identification (PhilID) cards, with at least 75,000 already delivered by the Philippine Post free of charge.

Step 1 involves the gathering of demographic information and can be done online.

Step 2 will process fingerprint and iris scans, and front-facing photographs at registration centers.

The PhilSys registration here is on hold until August in the wake of rising coronavirus cases and the modified enhanced community quarantine status from June 5 to 20.

PSA coordinates with the local government units to ensure health protocols are followed during the Step 2 process.

PSA likewise reminded government agencies and the private sector to recognize the PhilID as a valid proof of identity in transactions as mandated by Republic Act 11055 or the PhilSys Act.

There are penalties for agencies or establishments that will violate the law.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, the Philsys Act aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA)
