The San Juan city government on Friday announced its coronavirus active cases has dropped to only 38 as only one new case was added to its total confirmed cases.

In his social media page, Mayor Francis Zamora reported that the number of Covid-19 active cases in San Juan has significantly dropped to only 38, bringing the city’s total recoveries to 3,524 as of Wednesday.

Zamora cited the drop was due to the discipline and cooperation shown by the residents, as they continue to observe the city’s minimum health standards and quarantine protocols during the holiday season.

“Disiplina po talaga ang kailangan upang tuluyan nating mapigilan ang pagkalat ng (We only need discipline to completely halt the spread of) Covid-19 dito sa (here in) San Juan,” he said.

The city government was able to curb the local transmission of Covid-19, he said, through the “instilled discipline, understanding and commitment” among its residents.

“We are elated that we achieved this decline despite the notion and the expectation that the recent holiday season would make the numbers spike,” Zamora said.

Zamora added the city was able to control and contain the further spread of the disease through the “systems, mechanisms and interventions” enforced by the local government.

The city government has earlier launched the Covid-19 vaccine registration for its residents in preparation for the city-wide inoculation program, once the vaccines become available.

The registration of the San Juan residents who wish to get the free Covid-19 vaccine has already started on Jan. 4, he said.

Zamora urged the residents to sign up through online registration or visit their respective barangay halls or health centers for manual registration.

The mayor assured residents of safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines for all.

“Pipiliin natin yung bakuna na mataas ang efficacy, reputasyon, at acceptance sa tao at pasok sa local at international standards para hindi matakot ang ating mga mamamayan at maging mataas ang porsyento ng mga gustong magpabakuna (We will choose a vaccine that has high efficacy, reputation and acceptance from the people as well as approved by the local and international standards wherein the high percentage of the population would like to be vaccinated),” said Zamora.

Zamora said the city’s vaccination plan will be done in phases.

“We will be prioritizing health workers and front-liners to receive the vaccine first, then indigent senior citizens will soon follow,” Zamora said.

The city government has allocated a PHP50-million standby fund for the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines.

“We just want to be prepared and set up an orderly and fast rollout and vaccination process to make sure all those who would like to be vaccinated can be vaccinated,” he said.

Zamora earlier said the city government targets to implement the city-wide vaccination program as early as April 2021. (PNA)
