Enrollment in public schools in Ilocos Norte recorded a slight increase amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Compared to last year’s total of 86,998 enrollees, the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte (SDOIN) reported there are 87,023 learners who are enrolled this year.

Based on the Enhanced Basic Education Information System data, the increase in enrollment was observed in Kindergarten, Elementary, and Senior High School levels.

Private schools, however, reported a slight decrease in enrollment as some parents said they prefer to enroll their children in public schools now that the learning modalities used for both public and private schools are the same.

“What is the use of paying higher tuition fees in private schools when you can have it for free in public school? I think it is more practical to enroll your child now in public as the mode of instruction is the same,” said a parent who requested anonymity.

Under the new normal education system, learners no longer need to go to school as they are prompted to study on their own at home with the aid of self-learning modules given in advance by their teachers.

Blended learning also allows the use of educational equipment such as computers with internet, television, radio, or smartphones.

As of this posting, school officials are monitoring each school to ensure the smooth transition of the new normal education system.

“We must be prepared for whatever concerns that we may encounter being new to this,” Schools Division Superintendent Joan Corpuz said on Wednesday

In a public advisory posted online, the SDOIN announced its hotline numbers are open for whatever concerns regarding the opening of classes. For inquiries, the public may contact the following: (+63)998-564-3681, (+63)919-009-3277, (077)770-5963. (PNA)
