The city government here confirmed its first death due to coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) as confirmed cases climbed to 234 on Wednesday.

The city health office reported a 77-year-old woman with chronic kidney disease Stage 5 died after being infected.

The patient from the city’s Barangay (village) 46, who died on August 24, was found positive for Covid-19 on August 17 and had been confined in a hospital until her death, according to the city health office social media post.

“With the first death in the city, residents can do their share to avoid the virus and prevent infections. We should report immediately to health authorities if we have Covid-19 symptoms and seek early medical intervention,” Vice Mayor Jerry Yaokasin said when sought for comment.

As of Wednesday, the regional capital has 234 total confirmed cases, including 83 recoveries. Among five cases, the youngest patient is a one-year-old girl and the eldest is a 72-year-old woman.

Meanwhile, the local health office has temporarily suspended the processing of health certificates on Wednesday to give way to regular disinfection activity. (PNA)
