Dogs are man and woman’s best friend, they are excited to see you no matter what, they provide comfort during tough times, they love their owner just as much if not more than their owner loves them. Dogs are a joy to have but rather than just thinking about caring for dogs, it is also important to take note of how you got your dog. #AdoptDontShop has existed for a long time in America, with animal shelters and adoption available in almost every state, we’re largely behind here in the Philippines. Here are some reasons why it’s better to adopt and not shop.

1. You help eradicate illegal breeders.

Illegal breeders keep breeding dogs because they see a demand for that specific breed. This is potentially harmful to dogs because oftentimes, illegal breeders do what they do for money and not to preserve the dog breed. This can lead to the death of female dogs and puppies, especially if they’re worn out or mated with a dog too large for them. By adopting, the demand for certain breeds will decrease to eventually eradicate illegal breeders.

2. You save money by adopting.

If you buy dogs from breeders especially purebred dogs, that can easily cost upwards of P10,000 and even reach up to half a million Pesos, depending on the dog breed. Adoption fees are much cheaper than P10,000 but vary depending on the organization. With Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) Welfare Philippines, the adoption fee for dogs is P1,200.

3. You can help control the pet population.

With dogs unsupervised on the streets, they can easily satisfy their desire with any other dog on the street. Considered how many Aspin‘s are present in our country, it is as if breeding never stops. When you adopt a dog, you can supervise them and their behavior on dogs and around other animals so that the number of homeless dogs does not increase.

4. You provide a better life for the dog

A lot of dogs that are up for adoption have faced a difficult life, some may have come from dog-fighting rings and some have never known the feeling of a loving and safe home. When you adopt a dog, you introduce it to a new life filled with love and nurture that your dog will also project onto you.

It seems as if there are no disadvantages to adopting a dog, and that is true! Adoption agencies and organizations are eager to give these dogs in the hands of loving people. Here are some places in the Philippines where you can adopt one:
