Three local government units (LGUs) in Ilocos Norte performed strongly in the 2026 measles-rubella supplemental immunization activity (MR-SIA), contributing to the province’s efforts to protect children against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Dr. Rickson Balalio, provincial health officer of Ilocos Norte, confirmed this on Monday, saying it highlights the dedication of local health workers, local government leaders, community volunteers, and parents in ensuring that eligible children receive their measles-rubella vaccines.

“Warmest congratulations to the municipalities of Carasi, Currimao and Dingras for achieving outstanding MR vaccination coverage,” Balalio said in a statement.

The municipalities of Carasi, with 144 eligible children; Currimao, with 767; and Dingras, with 2,954, in the province of Ilocos Norte have achieved more than 95 percent vaccination coverage as the MR-SIA approaches its third week of implementation this month of August.

The Department of Health–Ilocos Region is targeting at least 95 percent vaccination coverage among eligible children across Region 1, a level considered important for achieving herd immunity and preventing outbreaks.

For Ilocos Norte, the campaign targets 42,632 children aged 6 to 59 months.

About 71.7 percent, or 30,561 children, have been vaccinated in Ilocos Norte, followed by Ilocos Sur with 61.3 percent or 29,866; La Union with 45.9 percent or 28,734; Pangasinan with 30.1 percent or 87,762; and Dagupan City with 29.5 percent or 4,540 individuals.

Balalio said the performance of the three Ilocos Norte LGUs demonstrates the value of strong local coordination and community participation in bringing immunization services closer to families, including those in remote communities.

Health authorities continue to urge parents and caregivers to have eligible children vaccinated through government health facilities and designated vaccination sites. (PNA)
