Some 150 Public Information Officers (PIOs) from different government agencies across the Caraga Region gathered for a one-day Caraga Regional Information Officers Conference on Thursday, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.

The conference, spearheaded by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), aims to equip PIOs with learning opportunities in AI and cybersecurity amid rapidly evolving technologies and communication platforms. Technical experts from Caraga State University and the Department of Information and Communications Technology served as resource speakers.

“As public communicators, we carry the responsibility of ensuring that our communities receive credible, relevant, and accessible information. The rise of artificial intelligence, the growing importance of cybersecurity, and the expanding role of mobile journalism present both opportunities and challenges that require continuous learning and collaboration,” PIA-13 Regional Director Venus Garcia said.

Topics discussed included Understanding AI Tools, Ethical Practices, Cybersecurity Awareness in the Digital Age, and Mobile Journalism. PIOs also received information on PhilHealth’s Yaman ng Kalusugan Program, Zero Billing and updates on El Niño.

Kylee Doreene Que-Plaza of the Department of Tourism called the conference a meaningful experience that provided practical insights on effective communication.

“This year’s topics talk about data privacy, the responsible and ethical use of AI tools in government communication, and the growing importance of mobile journalism in today’s fast-paced digital landscape,” said Andy Ordoña of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Garcia thanked the speakers and PIOs who joined the conference, hoping that PIOs in the region will continue to be empowered with the skills and knowledge needed to adapt to the evolving media and information environment. (PNA)
