One of the country’s oldest persons to contract the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) was discharged on Tuesday from the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC).

Baguio Public Information Office (PIO) chief Aileen Refuerzo said the 106-year-old male from barangay Irisan here was given a clean bill of health after 11 days of confinement in the hospital. The elderly joined another 106-year-old from Cagayan de Oro City who was also reported to have recovered on Tuesday as among the oldest survivors of Covid-19.

Refuerzo said the patient was earlier confined after showing some symptoms last October 9, but has since been cleared of any sickness, and was discharged.

In her report, Refuerzo said, “although having only mild symptoms, he was admitted to the BGHMC because of his age which is under the vulnerable group”.

“Based on the Department of Health [DOH) guidelines, patients who have no more symptoms can be discharged after 11 days of isolation and without necessarily undergoing another swab test,” she said.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong lauded the medical team for helping the patient recover.

Baguio has recorded a total of 1,704 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic last March.

On Monday, the city logged 65 new cases, with total active cases now at 589. Twenty-one Covid-19 patients also recovered but a 77-year old female succumbed to the disease, bringing the death toll to 21. This Summer Capital saw a spike in cases starting in August when the city intensified its expanded testing by checking on the vulnerable sectors.

In the Cordillera, the total Covid-19 cases stand at 2,723, the Department of Health (DOH)-Cordillera tracker shows. (PNA)
