Young sports aficionados here will be allowed to play individual and dual games only as they undergo a limited sports program for the first time since the pandemic was declared in March 2020.

Dr. Cecil Atilano, city sports development officer, said Friday the 25th Basic Sports Camp will start on July 2 at the Mayor Vitaliano Agan Coliseum after being suspended for two years.

“The city’s summer sports clinic will once again open its doors to young aspiring athletes this July,” Atilano said in a statement.

This year’s sports disciplines include archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, boxing, chess, dance sports, gymnastics, karatedo, pencak silat, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, weightlifting, and wushu, among others.

Participants in the month-long sports program will be also limited to 1,400 enthusiasts with ages between eight and 15 years old, maintaining classes at a 1:10 ratio under the supervision of the City Sports and Development Office and 140 trainers.

Only children with coronavirus Covid-19 vaccination will be allowed to join the sports camp.

Several athletes mentored in the past under the program have gone on to win medals and accolades in national and international sports competitions.

One of them is Eumir Marcial, who won a bronze medal in the boxing middleweight division at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. (PNA)
