Slam Dunk fans, are you ready to hit the cinemas? It’s been years since the last franchise aired on television, and fans have waited long enough.
The well-loved household anime is finally returning to theaters this year. Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk franchise confirms release in theaters throughout Japan in December 2022 with the title “The First Slam Dunk.”

Ahead of the movie’s Japanese release, its official Twitter account dropped a series of teaser posters containing Slam Dunk characters. And, fans excitedly identify familiar faces on its new design sketch.

It doesn’t end there! Fans are about to get a first look at the upcoming film, with the official movie trailer set to drop on July 7, 2022, on the film’s official Youtube page. The movie trailer is expected to shed more light on the teasers and reveal some new features everyone can look forward to.

Toei Animations and Shueisha released the current staff of The First Slam Dunk movie on the film’s official website, with the original series creator Takehiko Inoue himself taking on the writing and directing role. Other staff confirmed to join him are Yasuyuki Ehara for character design and animation, Daiki Nakazawa as CG director, Yuta Ogura as CG producer, Kazuo Ogura as art director, and many more established names.
Slam Dunk revolves around the story of Hanamichi Sakuragi, a teenager who decides to become a basketball player to make Haruko Akagi fall in love with him. He joins the Shohuko High School basketball team, where he’ll meet his teammates and friends, who will make him love the sport. Together they’re bound for a game that will bring them face to face with powerhouse school teams of Japan in their journey to Interhigh.
No potential international releases have yet been confirmed for the film, so international fans need to stay tuned for future updates.
