The city government of Borongan in Eastern Samar has begun the first payout of the monthly allowance for senior citizens.

Since its distribution on Monday, the city social welfare and development office (CSWDO) has served 494 beneficiaries from the villages of Bugas, Can-aga, Sta. Fe, Tamoso, San Saturnino, and Punta Maria.

Each senior citizen is entitled to a PHP250 monthly allowance but will receive the amount equivalent to four or six months, Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda said in a statement on Thursday.

“This was made possible through the concerted efforts of the city council, the CSWDO, and the Office of Senior Citizens’ Affairs (OSCA), who pushed for the approval of Ordinance No. 175 granting the regular monthly allowance for senior citizens,” he said.

The city government targets to complete the cash distribution to all qualified beneficiaries next week.

Recipients may contact the OSCA or the association president of their respective villages for the schedule of the payout.

“Regardless of whoever will lead the city in the future, this has been institutionalized and will be a permanent program for senior citizens. As of now, the distribution is ongoing while we ensure minimum health standards are observed,” Agda said.

Borongan City, the capital of Eastern Samar, is approximately 187 km. away from Tacloban City, the regional center of Eastern Visayas. It is home to more than 69,000 people. (PNA)
