“Meteor Garden” actress Barbie Hsu, 48, has passed away due to pneumonia after contracting influenza during the Lunar New Year holiday.

Reports have cited confirmation of Barbie’s sister Dee Hsu, through her agent, about the demise of the beloved actress.

In the early 2000s, the Taiwanese drama series “Meteor Garden” (2001) sparked a cultural phenomenon across Asia.

The hit TV show was a defining moment for Philippine pop culture, as Barbie Hsu’s portrayal of Shan Cai resonated deeply among Filipino audiences. Shan Cai’s character as an underdog with a strong will and a heart of gold became an icon for many viewers.

Along with the romantic interest with the F4 gangsters, the show brought a fresh wave of interest in Asian dramas. “Meteor Garden” further introduced and welcomed Filipino viewers to the genre of East Asian dramas, opening the doors to future hits from Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, among others.

Barbie Hsu and her character Shan Cai became a style and icon being widely imitated by fans. Her role also sparked a renewed “Asian Fever,” which is a dub on the fan craze for Asian music and merchandise.
