President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday called on members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to stay “resilient” by implementing strict quarantine protocols under the “new normal” amid the prevailing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

In a taped message aired during the PNP police service’s 119th anniversary, Duterte thanked the organization for its “selfless” service as a front-liner in the country’s fight against Covid-19.

“I congratulate everyone – especially the outstanding units and deserving personnel that will be awarded today – for your crucial role in making the PNP a highly dynamic, professional, and responsive organization,” he said.

Duterte guaranteed that the nation notices their contributions as “vanguards of peace and order” across the country.

“Be assured of our nation’s gratitude for your significant contributions to our campaign against illegal drugs, criminality, and terrorism,” he said.

The President also expressed hope that the police force would accomplish more for the nation’s safety and security.

“May you build on the gains of your achievements and continue to serve with honor and justice,” he said.

The PNP police service’s anniversary was broadcast live from its national headquarters and in all its 17 regional offices across the country.

It carried the theme “Towards A Pandemic-Resilient PNP: Deploying Digital Technologies and Adopting Protective Protocols in The New Normal”.

The PNP police service’s anniversary commemorates the establishment of the Philippine Constabulary on Aug. 8, 1901, as the country’s first insular police force.

This year’s rites allowed guests and police personnel to join the ceremony through live interactive platforms as an alternative to the traditional full-dress parade and review ceremony in observance of strict health protocols imposed by the government.

The PNP also presented awards to units and personnel with outstanding performance and achievements in service in the past year. (PNA)
