The Philippine Navy (PN) on Thursday announced that it has committed to have more cooperation with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in addressing traditional and non-traditional threats.

This took place as JMSDF chief-of-staff Vice Admiral Saito Akira paid a courtesy call on PN chief Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta at the Navy headquarters in Manila on Wednesday, the service’s spokesperson, Capt. John Percie Alcos, said in a statement.

“During their meeting, Vice Admiral Ezpeleta and Admiral Saito discussed key areas of defense cooperation, including the PN’s modernization efforts, joint maritime security initiatives, and strategic partnership between the PN and JMSDF,” he added.

Alcos said both naval officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration to address both traditional and non-traditional maritime security challenges which are guided by shared values and mutual interests in upholding regional stability.

A significant highlight of the visit was the signing of a letter of intent between the PN and JMSDF, with Ezpeleta expressing his thanks to the importance of deepening naval cooperation with Japan.

“In the face of growing hurdles, and transformations in our maritime security environment, may this day serve as a reminder of our capacity to draw upon (the) wealth of opportunities that can be explored between our navies to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the PN chief said.

Alcos said the visit of JMSDF chief underscores the enduring commitment of both nations to strengthening maritime security and regional stability. (PNA)
