A total of 200 runners participated in the Philippine Fleet’s “Fun Triathlon” held on Wednesday to raise funds for troops who died in the line of duty.

Philippine Fleet spokesperson Lt. Giovanni Badidles, in a statement Thursday, said the event was held in partnership with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Triathlon Team, Makati Medical Center Foundation, Philippine Coast Guard and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

Also present were cadets from the Philippine Military Academy, Philippine Merchant Marine Academy, Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific and various Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) units.

“More than 200 participants, uniformed personnel and civilians alike, swam, biked, and ran in two-road category triathlon events undertaken at the Naval Base Cavite swimming pool and the road network inside the camp,” Badidles added.

He added that the Beginner’s Triathlon covered a 100-meter swim, 5-kilometer run while the AFP Invitational Supersprint Triathlon Category covered a sprint distance of a 400-meter swim, 10-kilometer bike and 2.5-kilometer run.

“This race is part of the advocacy of the AFP Triathlon Team to raise funds for the benefit of the fallen heroes of the AFP who died in the line of duty. Proceeds of this activity are earmarked for the families of fallen heroes from the Philippine Marine Corps, among them is Pfc. Jeffrey Castillo,” Badidles said.

He added that the sporting event served as the first AFP-wide invitational triathlon and a venue to promote camaraderie among the military service and reservist personnel. (PNA)
