An endangered Philippine eagle named “Mangayon” died after being shot in Barangay Magayon in Compostela, Davao de Oro, on July 8.

Government troops found Mangayon with a shattered left wing after a suspected improvised marble gun shot the eagle while it was perched.

Mangayon was already lethargic and unresponsive with a partially dilated eye when it was rushed by the troops and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) staff to the municipal hall for an initial treatment.

The report states that he weighed “five kilograms and had a body condition score of 1 (BCS1), indicating slight thinness and dehydration.”

The eagle was then transported to Davao for further treatment but later died of his injuries, the group reported.

PEF says, “During the procedure, Mangayon began discharging foul fluids and solid materials from his mouth, which were identified as an undigested half-cooked chick. At 9:49 PM, Mangayon succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased.”

Necropsy results state that the young male eagle died due to severe blood loss.

The PEF is appealing to the government to implement stricter measures to prevent the killing of endangered wildlife like the Philippine eagle, known as the “monkey-eating eagle.”

This is the 20th eagle rescue case since 2020 and the 4th case in 2024 alone, all four eagles are victims of gunshot.

PEF reported the loss on Thursday, July 11.
