The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Tuesday welcomed additional support offered by Australia in boosting its aerial and maritime drone capabilities during a visit by Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
Wong announced Australia’s support, worth at least PHP413 million, to enhance the PCG’s aerial and maritime drone capabilities from 2026 to 2030 during a visit to the PCG headquarters.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan welcomed Wong and toured her inside multi-role response vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua.
The new assistance complements Australia’s previous support for the PCG’s Maritime Domain Awareness initiatives and showcases the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.
The event featured a static display of drone assets previously provided by Australia.
Gavan and Wong then held a private meeting where they discussed maritime security and opportunities to further expand bilateral maritime cooperation.
In a statement, PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the additional support is “founded on mutual trust and a shared commitment to promoting a peaceful and rules-based maritime region.”
“The PCG remains committed to working closely with Australia to strengthen maritime security and enhance its capabilities in safeguarding the country’s maritime interests,” Cayabyab said. (PNA)
