The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday clarified that more than 2,000 security guards currently fill permanent positions in public schools nationwide.

The clarification came after Education Secretary Sonny Angara expressed interest in requesting more plantilla items for security guards from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) due to the recent violent incidents in schools across the country.

“Education Secretary Sonny Angara previously highlighted the historical reduction of school-level security items during past rationalization programs to provide context on the current staffing baseline,” the DepEd said in a statement.

It said that unlike the supposed 200 plantilla items for security guards previously cited, the DepEd has a total of 2,494 authorized permanent security positions based on the official Department of Budget and Management – Government Manpower Information System (DBM-GMIS) data as of April 24.

Of these, 2,242 items are currently filled, while 252 positions remain vacant, the DepEd said.

“DepEd remains committed to coordinating closely with the DBM to secure the necessary funding and authorization for additional school-level security personnel, thereby ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all learners and personnel nationwide,” the agency said.

The DepEd assured close coordination with local government units and the Philippine National Police as it implements comprehensive safety measures in about 48,000 public schools nationwide. (PNA)
