The Northern Samar provincial government has listed five students as new beneficiaries of its medical scholarships.

In a statement on Tuesday, Governor Edwin Ongchuan congratulated the five students who qualified for the local government’s scholarship program.

The medical scholarship program is to help deserving medical students from the province complete their studies and become licensed doctors.

“This scholarship program of the provincial government aims to help the province produce more doctors who will serve the community through their assignment in government hospitals in Northern Samar,” the governor said.

The five new medical scholars, studying in various schools in other areas, were chosen through a screening and evaluation process by the medical scholarship board.

The new medical scholars are Julie Ann Mente from Capul town, first-year medical student of Bicol University in Legaspi City; Juneica Midel Eulin from Lavezares town, fourth-year student of Remedios T. Romualdez Medical Foundation (RTRMF) in Tacloban City, Matt Denvher Leonor from Catubig town, first-year student of RTRMF, Jamaica Salurio from Catarman town, second-year student at RTRMF, and Kate Lacuata from Laoang town, first- year student of Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) in Metro Manila.

The scholars are entitled to receive grants that cover tuition and other school fees of up to PHP100,000 and an additional PHP70,000 for a stipend, book, and uniform allowance per semester.

The provincial government will also shoulder the internship and review fees for the physician licensure examination (PLE) of up to PHP60,000 and another PHP70,000 for a stipend, book, and uniform allowance.

The medical scholarship program of Northern Samar started last year with eight medical students as pioneering beneficiaries. (PNA)
