Classes in both private and public schools in all levels in the city of Manila are suspended on Friday, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso announced on Thursday.
“Tomorrow, all classes, all level, private and public, teachers, employees ng schools, magulang, wala pong pasok tomorrow (tomorrow, all classes, all levels, private, public, teachers, school employees, parents, no classes for tomorrow),” Domagoso announced in a Facebook live video.
The suspension of classes is in consideration of the families that were affected by Typhoon Ulysses.
As of 3 p.m. Thursday, 4,607 individuals or 1,125 families were safely evacuated and are staying in the city’s evacuation centers.
Domagoso said they are being given medical attention by the Manila Health Department and are provided with food and sleeping mattresses.
He said families who are staying in the evacuation sites will not be allowed to return to their houses until a go signal is released by proper government agencies.
Meanwhile, despite the strong winds and rain felt in the city early morning on Thursday, Domagoso was happy to announce that there was no reported casualty or death due to the typhoon in Manila.
Domagoso also thanked all the city hall employees who helped officials, members of the Manila Police District, and barangay officials for being alert and going beyond their mandated duties to help to those affected by the typhoon.
“Mukhang nagkaron ng epekto yung patuloy na paglilinis ng inyong lungsod sa kalsada sa Avenida, mga iskinata, pagsipsip ng mga drainage na kahit nung ECQ (enhanced community quarantine), umulan, tag-init talagang hindi tumitigil, walang bahang nakatatakot na naganap sa lungsod tulod ng Lagusnilad, Quezon Boulevard, Espana (it seems that the continuous clean-up drive by the city government in Avenida, alleys, the declogging of drainage done even during the ECQ, may it be raining or not we did not stop, no deep flood happened even in Lagusnilad, Quezon Boulevard, Espana),” Domagoso said.
As of Thursday afternoon, Domagoso said areas still not passable are Dela Fuente, Espana, Felix Huertas, Antipolo, Aurora Boulevard-Dimasalang, Aurora Boulevard-Monumento, Dapitan-Maceda, and Lacson-Dimasalang, among others.
Meanwhile, the streets of Alonzo Mendoza, Rizal Avenue, Rizal Avenue-Alvarez, Rizal Avenue-Lorenzo, and Rizal Avenue-Blumentritt have a gutter-deep flood.
The rest of the streets in Manila remain passable.
Domagoso has also ordered the Manila Department of Public Service to take advantage of the improved weather condition to continue clearing all other remaining debris.
He has also tasked the city electricians to check all the wirings and electrical installations and coordinate with the Manila Electric Co. to be able to restore disrupted power service in affected areas as soon as possible. (PNA)
