The Department of Tourism (DOT) unveiled on Wednesday a mural showing the biodiversity and key tourism destinations of Eastern Visayas.

The mural painted by young artists on a slope protection wall along the city’s Magsaysay Boulevard is expected to attract tourists and raise public awareness about tourism promotion and conservation.

DOT Assistant Secretary Gissela Marie Quisumbing and DOT Eastern Visayas Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes led the unveiling ceremony, witnessed by officials from government agencies, Tacloban city government, and the private sector.

The Philippines is one of the 18 most biodiverse countries in the world, and it is celebrated through a campaign dedicated to the importance of biodiversity and sustainability across regions, he said.

“As we admire the mural, we embark on a visual road trip through Eastern Visayas, beginning with the Biri Rock Formations in Northern Samar and the vibrant wildlife of Samar Island Natural Park. We also get to see the beauty of Tarangban Falls and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Danao, all connected by the iconic San Juanico Bridge, symbolizing the unity of people and nature,” Quisumbing said.

The mural is part of DOT’s “Love Inspired: Philippines a Canvas of Biodiversity” initiative.

For Tiopes, the unveiling is particularly timely as it serves as a prelude to the celebration of the National Tourism Week and the World Tourism Day this September, “reminding us of the essential role tourism plays in fostering conservation, cultural appreciation, and community growth.”

The official thanked Mayor Alfred Romualdez for allowing the transformation of slope protection through mural painting. He also thanked artists Kim Clinton Gonzales and Andrew Abainza for their artwork.

“The incredible artistry brought Eastern Visayas’ natural beauty to life in this mural. This will inspire all who see it to appreciate and protect our region’s biodiversity,” Tiopes added.

To underscore their commitment to maintaining the tradition of protecting and cultivating the rich biodiversity of the lands and seas of the region, the officials participated in the partnership handshake and ceremonial marking of their handprints.
