The ongoing Step 2 Registration of the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) here has moved to a larger venue to accommodate more registrants from this capital city.

PSA-Negros Oriental provincial chief Engr. Ariel Fortuito in an interview Monday afternoon said the registration is now being held at the 2nd level of the Robinsons Place shopping mall in Barangay Calindagan.

The activity was previously done at the Lorenzo Building along the national highway in Barangay Daro here. However, the area was not big enough to accommodate more registrants, he said.

As of Feb. 13, the total number of registrants to the national ID system here has reached 1,200, Fortuito said.

The PSA in Negros Oriental targets to accommodate 160 registrants per day “granting that there will be no technical glitches or other problems,” he added.

So far, the barangays here that have been served are Tabuc-tubig, Batinguel, Piapi, Bantayan, Junob, Banilad, Balugo, Candau-ay, and Bajumpandan, the PSA provincial chief said.

Fortuito also said the schedule for the Step 2 registration has no longer been followed as many people come on Saturdays.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID will be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA)
